Profile - Andreas Boettcher

Currently, together with Miro ITO, Andreas Boettcher (as International Communications Director for MEDIA ART LEAGUE - in charge of media, research and editorial projects) has been working on an ambitious multi-media presentation that will send out a message seeking to balance diversity and foster dialogue in the face of hostility and alienation that conversely appears to thrive in this era of global civilization, by leveraging his unique skills and long track record spanning North America, Europe and the Far East.

Born in Germany, he grew up both in Canada and Japan; with an English education, German within the family and French on the street in his adopted hometown of Montreal, and later Japanese in Tokyo, there was always one sociolinguistic culture nestling inside another.   This straddling of different and yet overlapping cultures became the norm in his life and fostered a truly multi-cultural mindset in him. He graduated from Sophia University (Tokyo) with a BA in Comparative Culture (with an emphasis on political science and cultural history) which he later augmented with post-graduate studies (major: Far East Asian Studies) at Ruhr University in Bochum (Germany).

He has so far participated at several publications as an editor of English text.   In addition, he has worked on some translation projects in the arts & academic sector, which include gEntering the inner sanctum of Noriko YANAGISAWAh, gA Photographer named Yasuhiro ISHIMOTOh (for catalogue editions published by Musashino University of Art [Museum & Library]).   The broad range of projects dealing with Japanese culture and tradition include a German translation of a concise version of the classical play gTales of Tenshu ( tenshu monogatari) h for a performance in Vienna in the context of the Austria-Japan year 2009 and an essay about Mannojo NOMURA for a tribute book (by Miro ITO) in 2004.

From 1999-2006 he was active as advisor & consultant for the largest translating company in Japan after having initially been hired to head the QA section (including hands-on experience as supervising language advisor, multi-lingual translator, chief proofreader & copywriter).

 

 

 

2003-   International Communications Director for MEDIA ART LEAGUE L.L.C. - in charge of media and communications services, research and editorial projects, as well as localization support & consulting (including corporate concierge services centering on translation and language solutions).

2005-2006   Oversaw diverse overseas marketing / localization projects as marketing and legal affairs consultant for HONYAKU CENTER INC (Japan's premier translation firm).

2003    Became senior QA advisor and overseas marketing associate for HONYAKU CENTER INC.

1998   Joined HONYAKU CENTER INC. as Head of QA section (Language specialist, chief proofreader/ translator & copywriter)

1987-98   Conducted various types of market research, J V / M & A preliminary preparatory work for JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) , Shizuoka Prefectural Government Office, EU commission, etc.  

1985-98   Researched, reported & semi-regular contributed articles for the following publications: EISENBAHN-EXPRESS (Bochum, Germany), NIKKEI ARCHITECTURE / NIKKEI DESIGN / NIKKEI MEDICAL / ASAHI CAMERA / GQ / OFFICE AGE (Tokyo, Japan).

Postgraduate studies at Bochum University, Bochum, Germany (Major: Far East Asian Studies).

Graduated from Sophia University (Dept. of Comparative Culture & Language) Major : Pol. Science and History of Japan.

Language abilities: Fully tri-lingual English, German and Japanese; reading knowledge of French.
